What Is Feline Soft Tissue Surgery?

Soft tissue surgery refers to surgical procedures performed on your cat's soft tissues, such as the skin, muscles, and internal organs, not their joints or bones. The following are some of the soft tissue surgeries we offer right here at our Kirkland practice:

  • Spay or Neuter: Spaying or neutering is a routine surgery that prevents unwanted litters, contributing to population control. It also minimizes the risk of reproductive system cancers in male and female cats, and helps curb unwanted behaviors like spraying, yowling, aggression, and roaming.
  • Exploratory Surgery: We may recommend exploratory surgery to examine organs and tissue within the abdomen. This helps evaluate gastrointestinal (GI) concerns, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain, and also allows us to explore masses we cannot fully assess using imaging alone.
  • Tumor or Mass Removal: If you notice an unusual lump or bump on your furry companion, we may recommend its removal and laboratory evaluation. Analyzing a tumor or mass will help us determine the best course of treatment.
  • Abscess Repair: An abscess, a localized pocket of infection, can be painful and cause serious health complications if left untreated. Our team will carefully drain, clean, and flush the infected area, then close it as needed to promote healing and keep the infection from spreading.
  • Foreign Object Removal: Curious cats are notorious for swallowing household objects, such as ribbon, string, or small toys, often leading to blockages in the stomach or intestines. Removing a foreign object causing an obstruction can be a life-saving procedure for your feline companion.
  • Bladder Stone Removal (Cystotomy): Bladder stones can be painful and make it difficult for your cat to urinate. A cystotomy is a procedure designed to remove bladder stones or blockages, providing relief and reducing the risk of complications.
  • Wound or Laceration Repair: Wounds or lacerations can result from scuffles with neighborhood cats or accidents. Prompt treatment is essential to prevent infection, pain, and other complications.
  • Hernia Repair: Hernias result from weakness or tears in the muscle walls or tissues that allow organs to push through or protrude. Surgical hernia repair helps alleviate your cat's discomfort and prevent potential complications.
  • Pyometra: Pyometra is a serious uterine infection that affects unspayed cats. We may recommend emergency surgery to remove the uterus, helping prevent potentially life-threatening complications.
  • Splenectomy: The spleen is an organ located in the middle of the abdomen. A splenectomy surgery is designed to remove the spleen, which may be necessary if it is enlarged, has a mass or tumor, or is ruptured, helping prevent internal bleeding and other complications.

How Can You Care for Your Cat After Surgery?

We will provide you with post-operative care directions and pain management protocols to promote healing and ensure a smooth recovery. Depending on the procedure, you may need to restrict your cat's activity in the days following surgery.

Make sure to provide a calm and relaxing area with comfortable bedding and access to a litter box and fresh water. Your cat may need to wear a cone to prevent licking or scratching the surgical site, which may delay healing and lead to infection. If you have any questions or concerns in the days following surgery, make sure to contact us for guidance.

Did You Know?

Cats purr not only when they're content, but also when they're hurt. It is believed that the low-frequency vibrations of a cat's purr have therapeutic effects, promoting self-healing. So don't be surprised if you find your cat purring while recovering from soft tissue surgery.
