Ways to Keep Your Cat Safe and Warm this Winter

We all know that our feline friends love to find the warmest spots to bask in! From a sunny windowsill to a pile of clothes right out of the dryer, your cat will enjoy feeling nice and toasty. With the cold winter days upon us, you’ll need to keep in mind ways to keep your cat safe, warm, and comfortable.

Keep Your Feline Friend Indoors

While our curious furry companions may love to roam outdoors, cold winter days call for keeping your kitty in the safety of your home away from the dangers of developing hypothermia and frostbite. Also, keep in mind that de-icing products and antifreeze laying around can pose risks to your cat’s health.

Provide Warm Areas

Your kitty will love snuggling in a warm, cozy blanket on a cold winter day. Make sure your cat’s bedding provides the warmth needed for a comfortable snooze. If required, you will find many pet-safe heating options available to you such as heating discs and thermal warming pads. Make sure your cat is free to move away from the source of heat if it becomes too warm. Additionally, never use a human heating pad to keep your kitty comfortable. If your cat chews the cord, this may pose an electrocution hazard.

Regulate Your Home’s Temperature

Make sure that your home stays nice and warm. Keep in mind that cats are most comfortable at 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit. If you prefer cool temperatures, you could always dedicate a warm room for your precious feline.

Be careful when lighting up a fireplace or using space heaters. Sparks flying can injure your cat, while a cat left unattended around a space heater is a fire hazard. One jump could topple the heater and potentially start a fire.

Spread the Warmth

While your kitty may be basking in the warmth of your home, there are countless cats out there in the frigid winter nights. You can help by leaving out food and water in heated bowls for your neighborhood cats. Also, be mindful that stray cats left out in the cold will seek warm spots for shelter. Repurpose an old doghouse, filling it with old blankets, to provide a safe resting space.

Be aware that some cats will climb into warm car engines to escape the harsh winter weather. Spread the word to all those you know to check their cars carefully before starting their engines to ensure no cat is harmed.
